How to cut through the crap with the ‘certified’ logos and choose amazing, ethical chocolate….
You may be thinking this is just another company trying to get your money.
And while earning enough to keep the wolf from the door is all well and good. It's not the main reason behind what I do.
Here's part of my story....
Some time ago I was working on another chocolate business with a friend. It was recommended to me to research where cocoa comes from, who grows it, how it's made and who ultimately turns it into chocolate.
And so I did.
I delved in deep and discovered a world I never realised existed.
The lives of the cocoa farmers and their families.
I had no idea that in the 2 billion dollar chocolate industry, the cocoa farmers were the poorest of us all. When in fact they should be the richest.
They literally grow cocoa on trees!
And while we're complaining about our Toblerone's missing pointy bits, using it in creative ways like a newspaper rack or chocolate getting more expensive.
They're living in remote forests with no running water, electricity or proper sanitation.
They have poor roads, which flood in the rainy season, along which they carry their cocoa pods to cocoa producers, who then ferment the beans that come from inside the cocoa pods.
The women have no access to healthcare when pregnant and when giving birth. And then there's child slavery. Which in the 21st century, is still happening.
While I can sit here and be all preachy, I'm not going to.
Because things are slowly changing.
A new movement is happening where cocoa farmers are getting 'better than' fair trade prices for their produce.
And it all starts with the chocolate makers....
